Cultivating an L.A. Hmong Community

There is a common understanding that when a Hmong person journeys into the diaspora, they will find Hmong community if they seek it, and the community will welcome them with hospitality as if they were immediate family. I found this hospitality every time I left the comfort of my family’s home in Fresno, California, to the Twin Cities in Minnesota, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and New York City. This past weekend, I drove down to Los Angeles to meet its Hmong community. Like many large cities outside of the large Hmong enclaves, such as the central valley in California and the Twin Cities of Minnesota, Los Angeles’ Hmong community is a young and vibrant one. I grew up in Fresno where we are some 30,000 Hmong strong. I do not know how many live in the City of Angels but the Hmong have an early history in southern California. Another year has come and gone. And a lot has happened. From movies and books that brought our stories to the forefront to a devastating flood that swept through regions of Laos, impacting thousands; we’ve gathered up some our Lao’dest moments of the year that defined the Laotian community. Little Laos’ 2018 Year in Review JANUARY 4 – Rapper EraNetik is featured on rapper 50 Cent’s “Thisis50” website for his music video “Yellow Fellow” 10 – Luang Prabang comes in at No. 52 on the New York Time’s list of places to travel in 2018 17 – Minnesota swears in its first Hmong American judge, St. Paul lawyer Sophia Vuelo. The state’s jurist is right at home on Ramsey County bench. 23 – Chef James Syhabout’s book “Hawkerfare” is released 25 – The National Gallery in Jakarta, Indonesia opened “The Orient and Beyond,” a special exhibition of the works of Genevieve Couteau (1925-2013).
