Heritage Day: Our Folklore

I am invited (as are you) to an annual event by the Hmong Minnesota Student Association (HMSA) at the University of Minnesota: Peb Zaj Dab Neeg, Our Folklore.  It’s a musical completely produced by students to include an extravanganza of singing, dancing, acting, and poetry. It takes place this Saturday, November 17, 2012 at the St. Paul Student Center’s Northstar Ballroom (2017 Buford Ave., St Paul, MN, 55108) from 12pm to 4pm. It’s completely free and open to the public.

A description of the musical reads: “When three of our most traditional folktales intertwine, relationships are forced to endure unwelcome temptations and struggles. How will happily ever after triumph over the age old battle of good vs. evil?” I don’t know, but sounds exciting!

According to this year’s HMSA president, Josephine Yang, “HMSA was established in 1986 and aims to support and empower the advancement of students, community members and society through the active promotion of education, social change and Hmong culture, thus creating leaders for a better tomorrow.” In order to do this, the student group puts on shows such as the Heritage Day and different events throughout the academic school year, including social gatherings, educational workshops, and volunteering opportunities.

Come out and enjoy the show! It’s free. There will be food. Can’t get much better than that!
